Hey, I’m Ruby!

My name is Ruby I am 24 years old. I am currently studying a bachelor’s degree in social work. I would describe myself as someone who is energetic, very talkative and pretty easy-going. I’d like to say I’m funny, but I don’t know if Ethan would agree at times.

I love being outside and the beach is my favourite place in summer, I like to spend as much time as I can out in nature and going camping. I also have a cat called Nina which I am completely and utterly obsessed with, he is my furry son.

I’ve been working as a disability support worker for the past two years and it’s such a pleasure every day. I originally got into support work through a friend while I was working in hospitality and fell in love with the job instantly. I also thought that disability support would be a great stepping-stone into social work.

Ethan would say my primary job is probably to annoy him. Ethan is a creature of habit so each of us has our particular roles. The main role of my job is supporting Ethan with personal care, such as showering, getting dressed and going to the toilet, but the most important job is making sure he gets his Zambreros for lunch every day which he’ll perish without.

Besides personal care, Ethan and I have been on lots of memorable outings, my particular favourite is going to Semaphore Beach supporting Ethan to be a little beach mermaid like me. My job also involves a lot of assisting Ethan with transport. On Sunday I transport Ethan to catch up with his dad and I also have a big role in transporting Ethan to the footy and any other events he might have on. Also, every Monday Ethan, Keith Maureen and I go swimming which is always a laugh.

Ethan is my first physically disabled client and there are many new things I have learnt about my job, the disabled community and how to better support my clients through Ethan’s help which I am so thankful for.

When you’re a part of Team Ethan there is always something new to laugh about every shift. As a disability support worker, you often only work solely with your client so, it’s always nice to have the extra help and social aspect when working as a team.

Each person in the team is so kind and there is something different about everyone which makes them so special in their own way. After being a part of Team Ethan I felt like I had a long-lost dysfunctional second family I didn’t know about. It has been such an amazing journey so far and I'm excited for what the future brings for Ethan.
